Mixed state is a condition of bipolar disorder in which symptoms of mania and clinical depression occur simultaneously. This is the most volatile state as the mood can easily be shifted.

In some most serious case electric shock treatment is taken. This is known as Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT). In this process the brain of the patient is stimulated, which in turn brings relief to some people. It has some side effects like confusion, memory loss, and possibly movement disorder.

Another form of treatment known for bipolar disorder is Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. This treatment requires skilled doctor. This is currently an experimental procedure.
