Teens and Depression
The most obvious part of maturing with age is that the children want independence, the want to implement their right of freedom and in way break free from the restrictions imposed by their parents. Part of this behavior can be caused by the hormonal changes going on in their bodies during adolescence and also the difference in thinking that is broadening with each new generation and is fondly called by the children as generation gap. Due to such problems children at a very early age have been found to suffer form depression.
Teenagers have been suffering from depression since time immemorial. The pressure to perform, peer pressure and low self esteem etc all contribute to depression. Teenager suffering from depression show many common symptoms like they get irritated most of the time over small issues. They show carelessness, and tend to rebel if asked to behave responsibly. They might also get addicted to drugs and other mal practices> Suicidal tendencies also plague their mind and they tend to isolate themselves form the rest of the children and also lose interest in pursuing their hobbies like going out to play. Another common symptom can be degradation in academic performance by sudden decrease in the interest to study and rebellion
against any questioning forms the parents.
Teens these days are already suffering from a lot of pressure and identity crisis but many people around them might confuse this depression with their quest for their own identity. We need to be careful when dealing with children suffering from depression because it just makes matter worse and doesn’t help their cause. Teens suffering from depression are already in a lot of pain and we should help their cause by being more tolerant and considerate. We also need to discover the cause of the depression as soon as possible and consult a doctor if needed. Children shouldn’t be encouraged to take chemical medication and natural methods of curing depression should be considered like yoga and meditation and even methods like exercising regularly also help a lot. Children can mainly be cured by tender love and care and no harsh methods need to be adopted because such methods tend to backfire.
